Artist Statement
Maya Kaplan

Ever since I can remember I’ve loved to do art or anything creative. Starting from a young age, I would take art classes after school, but usually would end up with more paint on my body than on the canvas. Despite this, my mom continued to sign me up for classes all throughout elementary school and my love for art grew as my skills progressed. I always would get in trouble in class for doodling on my assignments or drawing instead of listening in class.
Until sophomore year, I was adamant that I only liked drawing and would hate painting. However, one day we had a guest artist during class who changed that for me. During her visit, she showed us how to paint a portrait and then we were supposed to paint our own. I quickly began to love the satisfaction and pleasure I got from painting and have only done painting since. Recently, I have tried to portray a message with my art rather than just painting to paint. Art has always served as an outlet to express myself, and I hope to continue to explore more techniques and mediums in college.
